The name of the Arctic, the northernmost region of the world, comes from arktikós (ἀρκτικός), meaning "related to or near the bear" — árktos (ἄρκτος) means "bear." Arktos was the Greek name of the Great Bear (its Latin name is Ursa Major), which was the best-known northern constellation.
