The name Basemat or Basmat (pronounced bas-MAHT) comes from the Hebrew בשׂמת (basmat), where it is the name of one of Esau's wives in Genesis 26:34, who was also one of the daughters of Ishmael (Genesis 36:3). There was also a daughter of Solomon named Basemat, who married Ahimaaz, the son of the high priest Zadok in 1 Kings 4:15. The name Basemat theoretically comes from the Hebrew verb בשׂם (b-ś-m), which means "to have a pleasant odor," and certainly comes from the noun בשׂם (bosem), meaning "balsam tree, balsam oil, perfume, spice," or something else with a fragrant odor.  This renders the name Basemat as "sweet smelling."
