The name Ezekiel comes to us from Hebrew through Greek and Latin, and all were essential to arrive at the modern name. In Hebrew, the name Ezekiel is spelled יחזקאל (Yeḥezqēʾl), a theophoric name combining the word חזק (ḥazaq), meaning "to be strong," and אל (ʾEl), which is either the name of the deity ʾEl, or the Hebrew word for "God," giving us "May ʾEl/God strengthen" or "ʾEl/God strengthened." However, when the Septuagint translated this name into Greek, it was rendered as Ἰεζεκιήλ (Iezekiêl), with the Greek letters iota and epsilon replacing the Hebrew letter yod. The Greek "Ι" at the beginning was eventually dropped and rendered into Latin as Ezechiel, and from there the name Ezekiel came into English.
