Peter, from the Latin word petros, meaning "rock" or "stone," is a name derived from the nickname that Jesus gave one of his apostles, Simon Bar-Jonah, in Matthew 16:13–19. Following Simon's confession that Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus said that he would build his church upon this "rock". Jesus had earlier given Simon the nickname Cephas, from the Aramaic כֵּיפָא (Kepha), meaning "rock."
