The name Jared/Jered comes from Hebrew, where it is the name of Enoch’s father ירד (yáred). The personal name is derived from the Hebrew verb of the same spelling, ירד (yarád), meaning “to come or go down, descend.” Jared’s 962-year lifespan is second only to his grandson, Methuseleh (Genesis 5:15–27). Jered (Heb: yéred, the same name but with a different initial vowel) is also the name of a later descendent of Judah mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:18.
