The name Jehoiakim comes from the Hebrew יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים (yĕhôyāqîm), where it is the name of one of the final kings of the Southern Kingdom of Judah (2 Kings 23:36).
This theophoric name combines the shortened form of the personal name of the Hebrew deity, יה (yāh) and the Hebrew verb קוּם (qum), which means “to rise, raise up.” This combination renders “Yah(u) has raised up.”
According to 2 Kings 23:34, Jehoiakim's original name was Eliakim (אֶלְיָקִ֣ים ʾelyāqîm), but he was renamed Jehoiakim by the Egyptian Pharaoh Neco. The name Eliakim substitutes אֱלִי (⁾eli), which is either the name of the deity ʾEl or the Hebrew word for "God," for יה (yāh), and renders “God has raised up.”
