The name Lazarus is a Latinized form of a theophoric name consisting of two Hebrew words: אל (ʾEl), meaning "God," and עזר (pronounced either ʿazar as a verb meaning "to help," or ʿezer as a noun meaning "help." Thus, the name Lazarus is the Latinized (and today, Anglicized) version of the Hebrew name אלעזר (ʾEleʿazar, or Eleazar), meaning "God helped" or "God's help."
