The name Naomi comes from the Hebrew, where it is the name of Ruth’s mother-in-law נעמי (naʿomi) in Ruth 1:2. This name comes from the Hebrew word נעם (naʿam) which means "to be pleasant, delightful, lovely." She changed her name to Mara ("bitter") when her husband and sons died (cf. Ruth 1:20).
