The name Reuben comes from the Hebrew ראובן (Reʾuven), a combination of the words ראה (rʾh) meaning "to see, look," and בן (ben), meaning "son," yielding a meaning of "Look, a son." According to the Bible, Reuben is the firstborn son of the patriarch Jacob. The name and its etymology are attributed to Genesis 29:32: "Leah conceived and bore a son (בן), and she named him Reuben (ראובן); for she said, 'Because the LORD has looked (ראה) on my affliction; surely now my husband will love me'.”
