From the Greek noun ἄγκuρα (ágkura), via the Latin ancora, both meaning "anchor, hook," we get our word anchor, which is a device used to secure a sailing vessel to the floor of a body of water and prevent it from drifting. Anchors come in many shapes and sizes, and a permanent structure to which a vessel is anchored is called a mooring.
