Our English noun dinosaur, a term used broadly to describe all kinds of large extinct reptiles, is made up of two Greek words; deinós (δεινός), meaning "terrible or fearful," and saúros (σαῦρος), meaning "lizard." Given the sheer scale of some dinosaurs, it is understandable why they are called "terrible lizards."
