Symphony today refers to a long, elaborate musical composition; it's also used as shorthand for symphony orchestra, an ensemble of string, wind, and percussion instruments. But at its most basic elements, symphony simply means harmony: it combines the Greek words sun/sum (σύν/συμ), meaning "together, with" and phoné (φωνή), meaning "sound, voice."
