Thespis (Θέσπις) was a semi-legendary poet from Attica, the region of Athens, in the 6th century BCE who was considered the Father of Greek tragedy. In the 6th and 5th centuries playwrights often acted in the plays they wrote; today, a thespian is an actor, following in Thespis's footsteps.
