The word aquarium comes from the Latin word aquārius, meaning “of or pertaining to water,” which is made of two Latin roots: aqua, meaning “water,” and the suffix arium, which “indicates a place associated with a specific thing” or “a device associated with a specific function.”
It is natural then that our English word aquarium refers to a place or tank where living aquatic creatures or plants are kept in water.
