Century, a period of one hundred years, comes from the Latin word centuria, meaning "a division of one hundred." Centuria could be used in many different contexts in Rome: in the military, it referred to a company of one hundred soldiers—with a centurion (cf. Matthew 8:5–13; Luke 7:1–10; Acts 10:1–33) serving as commander of a century; in agriculture, it was a plot of one hundred acres; in politics, it meant one of the voting groups of one hundred citizens, sorted by property ownership.
