Corona means "crown" in Latin, and in English it is used to describe circular, crown-positioned phenomena in the natural world, including the golden circle around the sun during an eclipse. Coronaviruses are so named because they have crown-like protein "thorns" covering their surface. It also explains why there is a crown on Corona^(TM) beer labels.
