Dexterous, meaning "skillful" or "nimble with one's hands," has a much simpler root meaning in Latin: "right-handed." This word is the Latin counterpart to the negative sinister, which at its heart means "left-handed." Dexterous comes from the Latin word dexter, meaning "right, on the right."

(So what does one call a left-handed person who is skilled with their hands?)
