Gubernatorial, an adjective that describes things associated with a governor (like a "gubernatorial race"), comes from the Latin word gubernator, meaning someone who steers a boat or ship. The governor metaphorically guides the ship of state. The Latin word gubernator in turn comes from the Greek word kybernetes, from which we get the English word "cybernetics." Arnold Schwarzenegger played a cybernetic villain in the movie "Terminator" and lived in the gubernatorial mansion in California from 2003 to 2011.
