Our English word larva comes from the Latin root of the same spelling, larva. In Latin, larva typically refers to a “ghost or specter” but can also mean “mask.” The Latin root larva took on its English zoological meaning when Carl Linnaeus used it to describe an immature form of an insect or animal that “masked” the adult form revealed after development.
