From the Latin words mea, meaning "my," and culpa, meaning "fault, guilt," the expression mea culpa literally means "through my fault" and is an express acknowledgment of personal fault or error. The term is found in a Latin confessional prayer said during Catholic mass that ends in with "mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa": "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault." In English, we use the term as an expression of apology or remorse, "Hey, mea culpa! My fault. Sorry." However, it is also used as a noun, as when someone issues a mea culpa for something they have done.
