Membrane is an anatomical term, referring to the skin or a soft tissue part of the body. It comes directly from the Latin word membrana, meaning "skin" or "parchment." (Parchment was made from animal skins.) Membrana, in turn, comes from membrum, which means "limb, part of the body."
