Memorial comes directly from the Latin word memoriāle, meaning “memorial” or “related to remembrance.”
Memoriāle can be seen in use in the Vulgate (a Latin translation of the Bible, for more click here) in Leviticus 2:9; “And the priest shall take from the grain offering its memorial portion (memoriāle) and burn this on the altar, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.” (ESV)
