From the Latin noun viscus meaning "entrails, internal organ," something that is visceral is felt in (or as if taking place in) the internal organs of the body. It is what many call a "gut feeling" and typically used to describe something that deals with deep emotions. Poetry, music, winning a championship, losing a loved one, love, hate, death—all of these can cause visceral emotions and responses.
