The name Rebekah, alternatively spelled Rebecca, comes to us from Hebrew. Rebekah was the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau according to the Bible (cf. Genesis 24–28). Rebekah is an anglicized form of רבקה (rivqah, pronounced RIHV-kah, with the Hebrew letter "bet" pronounced as a "v"). The spellings Rebecca (with two c's) and Rebekka (with 2 k's) come to us through Greek, as Romans 9:10 translates the Hebrew רבקה (rivqah) as Ῥεβέκκα (Rebekka). The meaning of the name Rebekah is uncertain, but it may come from the root רבק (r-b-q), which is related to the idea of "to tie, bind, yoke together."
