Leopard comes from the Latin word leo, meaning “lion,” and the Latin word pardus, meaning “panther.” Interestingly, when the Romans first saw a giraffe, they called it a cameleopardus, or “camel-lion-panther.” Leo-pardus described its coloration and spots, and camel(us) referred to its long, camel-like neck.
