From the Latin word pastor meaning "a shepherd," pastors in English lead congregations and devote much of their time to giving pastoral care to their "flocks." In addition to this metaphorical use, pastoral also describes a kind of poetry that features shepherds singing about their loves in an idealized rural setting.
