The name Gomer comes from the Hebrew גמר (gomer), where it is a unisex name that can refer either to a son of Japheth (Genesis 10:2) or the unfaithful wife of the prophet Hosea (Hosea 1:3). The name comes from the Hebrew verb גמר (gāmar), meaning "to end, come to an end, complete." As such, the name Gomer likely means "completion" or "fulfillment." As the son of Japheth, Gomer is the father of Ashkenaz and ancestor of the Cimmerians, and as Hosea’s unfaithful wife she represents an Israel breaking its covenant vows by worshiping other gods.
