The Hebrew noun גוי (goy, g-w-y) is a word for "nation" or "people." The word גוי (goy) can be used in association with Israel, as seen in Exodus 19:6: "You shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation (גוי)." However, it is most often seen in reference to non-Israelite nations. For example, 1 Chronicles 14:17 states, "The fame of David went out into all lands, and the LORD brought the fear of him on all nationsגוים).” The word גוי (goy) can also be used more loosely to refer to "people" in general without national connections, as seen in Psalm 43:1: "Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly peopleגוי)." Today, the word גוי (goy) is sometimes used as slang to denote a gentile—someone who is not Jewish, but from among "the nations."
