The Hebrew word יום (yōm, pronounced YOHM) is a noun meaning "day." It is one of the earliest words we encounter in the Bible, as it appears toward the beginning of the creation narrative in Genesis 1:5: "God called the light day (יום), and the darkness he called night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day (יום)." It is also part of the name of one of the most important Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur (יום כיפור), or "Day of Atonement."
