The Hebrew noun מים (mayim, pronounced MY-yim) is the word for "water." It can be singular or plural. We find מים (mayim) in the second verse of the Bible, as Genesis 1:2 says: "The earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters (מים).
